Empowering Farmers Through Smart Agriculture, Learning, and -Sustainable Farming Practices
tecGrw, in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), conducted a comprehensive farmer training programme across Nyanza, Rulindo, and Rwamagana Districts to strengthen sustainable crop production and post-harvest management. The programme covered soil preparation and transplanting, greenhouse management, irrigation and soil fertility management, integrated pest and disease management, as well as harvesting and post-harvest handling. By strengthening farmers' knowledge and technical capacity, the training aimed to improve productivity, enhance produce quality, and reduce post-harvest losses.
The Challenge
Farmers across the three districts wanted to improve the production of high-value crops, including tomatoes, Habanero peppers, onions, and bell peppers. However, many faced knowledge gaps in greenhouse management, nursery establishment, soil preparation, transplanting, irrigation, soil fertility, and pest and disease management. Farmers also experienced post-harvest losses due to limited knowledge of proper harvesting, produce handling, and affordable storage solutions, while many wanted stronger business skills to improve farm planning and market access.
Our Solution
TecGrw delivered an agricultural learning programme covering the entire farming cycle. Farmers strengthened their knowledge of smart agriculture, greenhouse management, nursery establishment, soil preparation, transplanting, irrigation, soil fertility, Integrated Pest Management (IPM), harvesting, and post-harvest handling. The programme also introduced Zero Energy Cooling Chambers (ZECCs) as a practical, low-cost solution for preserving fresh produce and reducing post-harvest losses. Through the "Your Farm Is Already a Business" sessions, farmers also developed skills in record keeping, cost management, and market linkages.
Results & Impact
The programme equipped farmers with knowledge to improve crop production, protect soil and water resources, reduce pest and disease risks, minimize post-harvest losses, and manage farming as a business . By combining smart agriculture with sustainable farming practices and continuous learning, tecGrw continues to support more productive, resilient, and market-oriented farming communities across Rwanda. ** Farmer Spotlight** "Before this training, we harvested our produce without paying much attention to how handling affected its quality. Through this training, we understand the importance of proper harvesting, sorting, storage, and preservation.
